Church of the Larger Fellowship
Late Summer Holiday Resources
July 29, 2003

In the next two weeks there are two opportunities for reflection and celebration - the ancient tradition of Lammas which celebrates the first harvest, and the modern memorial of the nuclear bombing of Japan, World Peace Day.

Lammas: August 1
Intergenerational Worship

From the current issue of New Connections, here's a plan for a family/small group ritual in celebration of the changing season. Suggestions for both North and South Hemisphere are included. http://www.uua.org/clf/connections/2003summer/seasons.html

Lammas is celebrated in some Unitarian Universalist churches with bread baking and breaking, rejoicing in life's goodness and the earth's abundance. Just about every culture in the world has developed some form of bread. It's a powerful symbol of common ground among peoples of the world. This summer, you and your family can celebrate Lammas and increase your global awareness at the same time. Four international bread recipes! http://www.uua.org/clf/connections/Summer/lammas.html

Sermon
A short sermon and description of a lay led UU worship for Lammas on the theme of sacrifice. http://www.cuups.org/content/liturgy/sunday/sacrifice.html

Peace Day: August 6
Intergenerational resources

August 6, 1945, was a day never to be forgotten in world history. It was the day the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, in a desperate effort to end World War II. Every year after that, August 6 has been known as Peace Day. The story of Sadako, retold here, is a sad but inspiring story of one Japanese girl's fate and her classmates' response. http://www.uua.org/clf/connections/Summer/peace-day.htm

Folding peace cranes is not simple, but can be approached as a meditation for peace. How to fold a crane - the very step by step approach http://monkey.org/~aidan/origami/crane/crane6.html
And the quick diagram approach http://www.sadako.org/foldingcranes.htm
