Report of the Librarian/Asst. Administrator

September 2005
Beth Murray

I have been working part time at CLF since January 2005. As of September 1, 2005, I began officially working 21 hours each week as Librarian and Church on Loan Coordinator.

The number of questions I ask Lorraine has diminished, and my ability to take on additional tasks has augmented. Below is a list of projects that I was doing in January, and continue to do now:

  • Order office supplies
  • Collect and sort through mail, on the days that I am here
  • Mail note card orders and order of service covers
  • Send out CLF inquiry materials to prisoners
  • Forward pen pal letters from prisoners to their respective pen pals, maintaining a record of how many and when letters are mailed to each individual pen pal
  • Mail new member packets to new CLF members.

Here's a fun fact -- Between April 1, 2005 and September 15, 2005, 188 new member packets have been mailed. Each packet weighs 1.25 pounds. The CLF office has mailed a total of 235 pounds of material over the last 5.5 months.

  • Communicate with Church on Loan (COL) members through library requests

Fun fact #2 -- Between April 1, 2005 and September 15, 2005, 18 COL groups have either joined for the first time, or renewed their membership.

  • Maintain the CLF Library (sending out materials, checking in materials)

Below is a list of new projects I have taken on:

  • Pack and unpack materials going to and coming back from GA
  • Send regular email to all Church on Loan (COL) contact people, with tidbits of resource information
  • Mail COL contacts a CD, courtesy of CLF and the UUA, titled Drive Time Essay s. The CD contains “21 short, spoken essays designed to engage, inspire, uplift, enlighten, rejuvenate and motivate.” 41 individual COL packets were mailed.
  • Assist Lorraine with the Second Offering Project by packaging and mailing fundraising materials to potential churches

Fun Fact #3 – Since this project started, 20 packages have been mailed.

  • Look for testimonials from CLF members to appear in the October Quest , including requesting permissions and photographs from the writers.
  • Access information and input information into Raiser's Edge
  • Organize the library such that I can see library database information arranged by the borrower's name. I have now begun to go after CLF members with overdue materials.
  • Publicize CLF through a variety of PR announcements:
    • News You Can Use is an in house publication that mostly focuses on new resources, for use by staff with our congregations or just genuine news about CLF staff
    • Congregational Mailing is a monthly mailing to congregations
    • District Link
    • Quest Did You Know? Box
    • UU World (Ads)
    • UU World (UU News)
    • InterConnections is an ally of board members and other leaders of Unitarian Universalist congregations, providing information and resources that help them in their work to create and build healthier congregations.
    • The Religious Leader is a publication intended for ministers
    • CLF-Announce is an email list for CLF members.
    • UU FaithWorks shares resources that inspire faith development, educate religious identity, connect ethical and spiritual practices, and empower religious educators, ministers, and lay congregational leaders in their roles and responsibilities of serving Unitarian Universalists throughout their lives.
    • UUA-L
    • YA-CM Monthly Mailing
    • Small Talk Newsletter (small congregations) is a newsletter published monthly by the Small Church Specialist of the Northeast District. Small Talk is devoted to strengthening the small Unitarian Universalist Congregation through informative articles, resources, and good ideas.
    • LREDA Newsletter
    • UUMA Newsletter
    • What's New at the UUA?

When I'm not at CLF, I am either chauffeuring my two teenagers to their assorted activities, teaching piano lessons (30 students!), playing piano for assorted Scottish Country dance classes, or trying to spend just a bit of time with my husband!
