RE Curriculum

Post Coming of Age -- Year 9

9: First quarter, October through December
Age range: 13-17
Centered on approx. age 14
Topic: Unitarian Universalist Identity

10 sessions in the topic area; plus one seasonal session, one session on Christmas, and one week off.

Sessions in the topic area:

Begin the "Religion in Life" program. Use the 1982 edition of this program, as it is designed for Scouts or non-Scouts (note that the current edition is designed for Scouts only) -- for anyone desiring a Unitarian Universalist identity program for persons aged 12-17. However, be sure to use the most recent edition of the UU Pocket Guide. Parents/guardians can serve as advisor for this program; alternatively, contact CLF regarding the possibility of a volunteer email advisor.

We recommend the following weekly schedule, based on the outline in the Religion in Life booklet (see booklet for details):

    Stage One, Part I:
  1. Field trip to UU worship service (if not possible, join CLF email list and experience weekly joys and concerns)
  2. Answer questions and complete journal exercise
  3. Read "Our Faith" and "Our Ways of Worship" in the Pocket Guide and discuss with advisor


  4. Stage One, Part II:
  5. Read "Our Roots" in the Pocket Guide. Choose a 19th C. UU to research.
  6. Work on research project.
  7. Complete and present research project.


  8. Stage One, Part III:
  9. Read "About the Church of the Larger Fellowship" in the Pocket Guide. Write letters or email messages to CLF's minister and Director of Religious Education (DRE).
  10. Review responses from CLF minister and DRE. Write letters or email messages to CLF's Treasurer and Board Chair.
  11. Review responses from CLF Treasurer and Board Chair. Review CLF budget. Review CLF governance structure. Write letter or email message to one of CLF's delegates to General Assembly (GA) and/or find out what GA is.
  12. Review responses about GA. Review your notes for Stage One in your journal with your advisor.

 

Seasonal session:

Choose one holiday from CLF's Cycle of Seasons that has special meaning to your family, and celebrate it together as a family

OR

Celebrate the solstice using a celebration from Starhawk's Circle Round.

 

Christmas session:

Celebrate Christmas together as a family. Tell the Christmas story using the version in From Long Ago and Many Lands.

 

One week off.

9: Second quarter, January through March
Age range: 13-17
Centered on approx. age 14
Topic: Our Jewish and Christian heritage and wisdom from the world's religions

10 sessions in the topic area; plus one seasonal session, one session on Easter, and one week off.

Sessions in the topic area:

Continue with the "Religion in Life" program, and complete the second section. (See first quarter, year #8.)

We recommend the following weekly schedule, based on the outline in the Religion in Life booklet (see booklet for details):

    Stage Two, Part I:
  1. Read "Our Work for Social Justice and Diversity" in the Pocket Guide. Talk it over with your advisor as outlined in booklet. Decide on a 10-hour service project to work on.
  2. Work on service project.
  3. Review service project with advisor.


  4. Stage Two, Part II:
  5. Read "Unitarian Universalist Principles" at the beginning of the Pocket Guide. (Note that the UU Principles have changed since the Religion in Life booklet was printed.) Discuss them with your advisor, and be sure you understand them.
  6. Choose one UU from the following list to research; tell how this person reflects UU values (suggested biographies are listed in parentheses):
    • Dorothea Dix (Stranger and Traveler, Dorothy Clarke Wilson) **
    • Hosea Ballou (Hosea Ballou, Ernest Cassara) *
    • Louisa May Alcott (Invincible Louisa, Cornelia Meigs) **
    • Or use These Live Tomorrow by Clinton Lee Scott, with chapters on 20 UUs. *

    • * Available from CLF Loan Library.
      ** Try local library.
  7. Work on research project.
  8. Present research project to advisor.


  9. Stage Two, Part III:
  10. Choose world religion research project.
  11. Work on project.
  12. Present research project to advisor.

 

Seasonal session:

Choose one holiday from CLF's Cycle of Seasons that has special meaning to your family, and celebrate it together as a family

OR

Celebrate the equinox using a celebration from Starhawk's Circle Round.

 

Easter session:

Celebrate Easter together as a family.

 

One week off.

Topic: Mixed

10 sessions in the topic area; plus one seasonal session, and two weeks off.

Sessions in the topic area:

Finish the "Religion in Life" program. (See first quarter, year #8.)

We recommend the following weekly schedule, based on the outline in the Religion in Life booklet (see booklet for details):

    Stage Three, Part I:
  1. Work on items a, b, and c.
  2. Work on items d, e, and f.
  3. Work on items g, h, and i. Write to CLF for an adult UU to interview.


  4. Stage Three, Part II:
  5. Interview the adult UU.


  6. Stage Three, Part III:
  7. Work on your credo.
  8. Finish your credo. Share it with your family.


  9. Stage Three, Part IV:
  10. Spend time writing in your journal about situation 1.
  11. Share what you've written with your advisor.


  12. Completing the program:
  13. Review everything you've completed with your advisor.
  14. Celebrate completion of program. It would be appropriate for the adult advisor or parent/ guardian to present a chalice necklace or pin to all young persons completing the program.

9: Fourth quarter, July through September
Age range: 13-17
Centered on approx. age 14
Topic: Social justice

9 sessions in the topic area; plus one seasonal session, two weeks off, and one annual session of evaluation (and assessment) in mid-September.

Sessions in the topic area:

Plan and carry out social action projects of your choice. Meet weekly and reflect on how your project went or is going. Choose a new project if you're ready for a new one.

Choose one holiday from CLF's Cycle of Seasons that has special meaning to your family, and celebrate it together as a family

OR

Celebrate the equinox using a celebration from Starhawk's Circle Round.

 

Evaluation session:

Remembering -- Brainstorm list of memorable Sunday school sessions from the past year.

Evaluating: From the children's point of view, what were the best sessions?

Revisiting the covenant: Review Sunday school covenant you created. Does it need to be revised? When done, sign it again for this year.
