Ethical Culture
Thanksgiving Ceremony (for two readers)
By Lois Kellerman, Leader, Brooklyn Society of Ethical Culture
Readings and Reflections
As we gather togher to celebrate another harvest,
may freedom ring from every heart,
and in this place may we find peace.
Every day we work,
but for now we set aside our work
for a little while
and rest
Every day we go our separate ways,
but now we gather together.
Eery day we count our life in hours,
in the value of the marketplace.
But now we stand in the spaces between time's beat
and think of what is good, what is lasting, what is true.
(the candles are lit)
We light candles of understanding
against the shadows of our times.
This is a sign of our joining together
with all those who sought goodness,
sometimes at great risk and sacrifice
throughout the ages.
We break bread by sharing simple joys.
We raise our cups of care in praise of life.
All: Peace!
Each person present is invited to share: "This year I am thankful
for..."
------------------
A child is a person who is going to carry on what you have started.
A child is going to sit where you are sitting, and when you are gone,
attend to those things which you think are importnat. You may adopt
all the policies you please, but how they are carried out depends on
a child. A child will assume control of your cities, states and nations.
A child is going to move in and take over your churches, schools, universities
and corporations. All your books are going to be judged, praised or
condemned by a child. The fate of humanity is in a child's hands."
Abraham Lincoln
------------------
We would give our children
the shiny stream
with hidden minnows
and rocks of leaf shadowed roundness
and the laughter of waterfalls.
We would give our children
a book whose worn pages
are bent with reading,
whose cover is smooth
with loving,
whose words are bold
with the unknown.
We would give our children
kisses of strength
to be shared
and eager love
and the knowledge
they are good
and this is joy.
