From the Director of Religious Education
News from CLF

Development of the religious education curriculum plan for young people continues. First of all, we are working on correcting some errors that various people have pointed out to us. Don't hesitate to call us with any other corrections or suggestions! And we have finally identified a preschool curriculum that's suitable for home use (see "From the CLF Loan Library," below), thus increasing the age span of the curriculum plan.

Ginny Steel, a retired director of religious education, has volunteered to edit and fine-tune the curriculum plan. Ginny is checking all the current lesson plans to make sure they will work for CLF families. She has also suggested some changes here and there, particularly in the area of social justice lessons. You will see the results of her work appearing over the next few months. Please bear with us as these changes are made in the Web site, and do let us know if you find anything wrong or out of place.

As you may already know, I only work ten hours a week as your director of religious education. That means I depend on volunteers like Ginny to make religious education material accessible to CLF families. I am looking for additional volunteers to convert printed curriculum materials into electronic form (i.e., into word processing files or PDF files). This will serve two purposes: first, it will make all RE materials available to overseas CLF members who right now do not have access to the CLF Loan Library; and second, it will give other CLF members easier access to RE materials. So if you can volunteer to help out with this, let me know as soon as possible. Perhaps you could help out! See the volunteer announcement below.

In other news, we have contracted with Sarah Gibb to develop the final section of the "Between Sundays" Web site for youth aged 14-18. Sarah grew up as a Unitarian Universalist, was very active in the UU youth movement, worked on a curriculum development project for youth at the Unitarian Universalist Association for a number of years, and is currently a student at Harvard Divinity School where she is preparing for the Unitarian Universalist ministry. She is scheduled to begin work this summer, and we hope to have this last section of the "Between Sundays" Web site completed by the end of 2003.

Finally, I note with sadness that two great religious educators, Margaret Gooding and Fred Rogers, died in February. Peg, a UU minister and religious educator, will be best known to CLFers for her "Stepping Stones" curriculum. Fred Rogers, a Presbyterian minister and creator of "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" on television, was not afraid to address difficult issues like death, illness, and self-esteem. Both these educators will be missed.
