Nominating Committee
FAQs about Serving on the CLF Board of Directors
What is the Term of Office?
Directors (there are twelve of them) serve terms of three years, and may serve two terms; Nominating Committee members serve one term of three years.
How often and where does the CLF Board meet?
Meetings of the directors are held in Boston in October, April, and in a telephone conference call in February. Because we are a web-centric congregation, Board members are expected to handle much of their committee and other Board work between meetings via the internet. The Church of the Larger Fellowship pays for reasonable travel costs, lodging, and meals for Board meetings.
What is expected of CLF Board Members?
- Board Responsibilities: Evaluate programs and set strategic direction and goals; create new policies to empower the organization to function smoothly and reach its goals; employ methodology to regularly review old policies; raise and monitor funds; oversee all affairs of the Church; and call and evaluate the work of the minister.
- Board Member Duties: Treat members of the Board, staff and congregation in a fair and respectful manner consistent with the principles of the Unitarian Universalist Association; be a member of the CLF and a generous contributor; be familiar with the structure, bylaws, policies and programs of the CLF; publicly advocate for the CLF, its mission and programs and its staff; attend Board meetings from beginning to end; and take an active role in the regular work of the Board, e.g., committee assignments, canvass calls, etc.
How does one get nominated to the Board?
The three-member Nominating Committee selects the candidates for each position, after announcing vacancies in Quest and on CLF-Announce. The Nominating Committee takes many factors into account, including overall balance and skill sets. Names for potential Board members come from many sources: individual members of the CLF/CYF can submit their own names for consideration, CLF Board members may suggest names, and other members of the CLF can refer or suggest nominees for the Board. Once the Nominating committee has met and reviewed potential candidates and developed a slate of nominees, ballots are available online or by mail to CLF members and CYF members in the spring. The formal election takes place at the CLF's Annual Meeting.
If I want to get nominated what should I do?
Nominations must be received by the CLF office by January 1. In order for the Nominating Committee to begin to get acquainted with nominees, they would like written responses to the following questions:
- Why are you interested in serving on the CLF Board?
- What special gifts/talents/skills/knowledge/life experience/UU experience will you bring to service on the CLF Board?
- What do you expect to gain/learn from service on the CLF Board?
The CLF welcomes nominations for the Board of Directors and the Nominating Committee. Inquiries and more information on the nominating process should be directed to the CLF office. Nominees must be members of the Church of the Larger Fellowship or Church of the Younger Fellowship in good standing.
